This is a speed test for vim — but instead of scoring words per minute, it scores how fast you can put your cursor exactly where you want it. Pick a 15, 30 or 60 second round above, and land on as many highlighted targets as you can. The timer starts on your first keystroke.
A classic typing test measures raw output: words per minute in insert mode. But most time in an editor is spent moving, not writing. This vim writing test measures the other half of the skill — targets per minute and keystrokes per target. A strong vim user reaches any spot on screen in 2–4 keys; the live “shortest” hint shows you the optimal sequence, so every round teaches the motion you should have used.
Test your regular typing speed elsewhere, then come back — editing speed is navigation speed. Also try the nvim speed test if you use Neovim, or read what vimtyper is.
